HIGHLIGHT OF GCA ACTION DURING COVID-19 CRISIS:
- Advocated for Hours of Service waiver exemption for transportation of live cattle, boxed beef, and inputs
- Provided documentation to producers to continue working and traveling as critical infrastructure
- Worked with legislators in DC to ensure that market inconsistencies were/are addressed, relaxed transportation regulation barriers during the crisis, and encouraged packers to shift their buying schedule to continue to move the market and provide beef to consumers
- Sent letter to Georgia's congressional delegation, urging them to take action on behalf of our industry, focusing on: ask to Secretary Perdue to ensure USDA monitors discrepancy in expected price discoveries, encourage meat packers to purchase cattle in cash market, request industry support through disaster payments using Market Facilitation processes and financial tools
- GCA President met with Secretary Perdue to share industry concerns and advocate for distribution of CARES Act payments; hand delivered letter of concern to The Secretary
- Worked to address disparity that producers are seeing in value of cattle, discussing concerns and short-term and long-term fixes for industry in GCA leadership, other state cattlemen's associations, and NCBA
- GCA sent letter to congressional delegation, along with other states in the Southeast, to request formal investigation of market conditions to USDA through the CFTC
- GCA joined multi-state letter asking Department of Justice to partner with USDA on their investigation, or to circumvent USDA and take over the investigation into the market disparity in the wake of the Kansas plant fire and COVID-19 impact
- GCA has spoken with Undersecretary Northey and Ibach to convey our industry concerns regarding COVID-19 impacts
